ACT leader David Seymour, who is trying to get a referendum on the Treaty of Waitangi, has rubbished a Te Pāti Māori-backed member’s bill to make Waitangi Tribunal recommendations binding, claiming the tribunal sees itself as a “parallel Government”.
Tākuta Ferris, Te Tai Tonga and Te Pāti Māori spokesperson for Te Tiriti o Waitangi, submitted the Member’s Bill into the ballot on Wednesday morning. Essentially it forms a response to Seymour’s Treaty Principles Bill, which would define the principles of the Treaty in law. If passed it would also see a referendum on having the defined principles become law.
