The Council of Medical Colleges has urged the Government to drop the Treaty Principles Bill, saying it is based on a “fundamental misunderstanding” of the Treaty.
The attempt to reinterpret the principles risks creating division and may hinder progress, council chair and RNZCGP president, Samantha Murton, says. The Government should instead focus on ending health inequity.
“The health sector must meet its obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi to ensure equitable health outcomes for Māori,” Dr Murton says in a media release.
