Even if localities end up a four-letter word, Golden Bay Community Health remains a textbook example of community-driven healthcare in action.
“We are a locality,” says the hub’s general manager Ruth Robson. “We saw the benefits of [the concept] early on and pre-empted a lot of [the Labour Government’s health reforms] because we felt it was just the right thing to do.”
Its network started with a governing tripartite alliance. Te Whatu Ora owns the central hub, the Golden Bay Community Health trust owns the land and rents it to the agency, and the PHO, Nelson Bays Primary Health, covers the management and employment framework.
