Natural Health manufacturers frustrated at lack of progress on regulation

The body representing New Zealand natural product manufacturers says the lack of modern regulation for the sector means New Zealand companies continue to struggle to compete on the world stage.

The Therapeutic Products Act 2023, which was made law by the previous Labour Government, was repealed by the new Government in December, fulfilling the National Party’s coalition agreement with New Zealand First.

The act regulated both medicines and natural health products. For the latter, the act required these products, with some exclusions for small manufacturers and Rongoā Māori, to get Medsafe approval before they could be sold or exported.
